Physical and neurological examination showed facial asymmetry noted only on crying, with a drooping of the right corner of the mouth (figure 1). The eyelid closure, nasolabial fold depths, forehead elevation and tearing, were symmetric and normal. The facial asymmetry disappeared after the crying stopped (figure 2) and, according to the mother, this was happening since birth. Asymmetric crying facies (ACF) is characterised by lower lip asymmetry in neonates only during crying. ACF has an incidence of 1:160 live births. It can result from a developmental abnormality caused by absence (agenesis) or incomplete development (hypoplasia) of the depressor muscle of the angle of the mouth or of the depressor muscle of the lower lip; likewise, it can result from a traumatic compression of the facial nerve in utero or during labour. 2 ACF, considered a minor anomaly, however, causes severe parental distress. Facial Asymmetry in a Crying Newborn: A Comparison of Two Cases and Review of Literature

Facial asymmetry in a crying newborn can be due to a variety of different causes. Neonatal asymmetric crying facies (NACF) is a specific phenotype, which is often underrecognized. It is defined as asymmetry of the mouth and lips with grimacing or smiling, but a symmetric appearance at rest. NACF needs to be differentiated from complete facial palsy in a newborn, which can occur due to traumatic...

Management of Synkinesis and Asymmetry in Facial Nerve Palsy: A Review Article

Introduction: The important sequelae of facial nerve palsy are synkinesis, asymmetry, hypertension and contracture; all of which have psychosocial effects on patients. Synkinesis due to mal regeneration causes involuntary movements during a voluntary movement. Previous studies have advocated treatment using physiotherapy modalities alone or with exercise therapy, but no consensus exists on the ...

Minimum effective dose of midazolam for sedation of mechanically ventilated neonates.

OBJECTIVE To determine the minimal effective dose (MED) of intravenous midazolam, required for appropriate sedation in 95% of patients, 1 h after drug administration. METHODS A double-blind dose-finding study using the continual reassessment method, a Bayesian sequential design. Twenty-three newborn infants hospitalized in intensive care unit participated. Inclusion criteria were: (i) post-na...

Assessment of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Findings in Facial Asymmetric Patients

Introduction: Due to the complexity of facial asy-mmetry, the diagnosis of different aspects of asymmetry via conventional radiographs is not precise. In this study, we investigated findings of facial asymmetry by using cone- beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, we evaluated CBCT findings of 18 patients i.e. a group of 14 females and 4 males ...

Congenital Unilateral Hypoplasia of Depressor Anguli Oris

Objectives. Asymmetric facial appearance may originate from abnormalities of facial musculature or facial innervation. We describe clinical features of congenital hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris muscle in a child. Material and Methods. Chart of a 10-month-old female referred to a tertiary care pediatric hospital for assessment of facial paralysis was reviewed. Data included relevant history...
